How to choose kids’ ski goggles?

Ski goggles are one of the most important accessories for a young skier. But how do you choose well? We’ll explain everything!

For kids and adults alike, the eyes are a fragile part of the body that absolutely must be protected. When skiing, snowboarding or sledging, it's the goggles that will do the most to protect kids’ eyes from the sun and the elements. But how do you choose well? We’ll explain everything!

Reminder: why wear ski goggles?

Before the age of 12, kids don’t have a fully formed crystalline lens. Their eyes are therefore even more sensitive than those of adults. Protecting them well is therefore essential to avoid problems in adulthood.

You should also be aware that in the mountains, the reflection of sunlight by the snow makes UV rays particularly powerful. Yet another excellent reason to equip your kid with ski goggles!

As you'll have realised, the main role of ski goggles is to protect the eyes from UV rays. But thanks to their shape, which perfectly fits the top of the kid's face, they also protect against wind, cold and bad weather.

Stronger than traditional sunglasses, ski goggles are ideal for winter sports that require more movement and therefore more impact. In the event of a fall, for example, the goggles’ imposing frame will protect part of the kid's face, with little risk of breakage.

If you prefer sunglasses, we advise you to look for specialist sports glasses with more solid frames.

Yellow, interchangeable or photochromic lenses... Which type of protection for which weather?

All our ski masks offer 100% UV protection, but the lenses can be tinted to a greater or lesser extent depending on the weather conditions for which they have been designed.

  • bad weather ski goggles

Good weather / Sun ski goggles

The "good weather" ski goggles are designed for sunny weather. Their lens is a dark brown colour for optimum visibility in the sun.

Bad weather / Fog ski goggles

The "bad weather" ski goggles are designed for fog and snowy weather. The lens is a bright yellow colour, making it easier to see the landscape on a white day.

  • Yellow, interchangeable or photochromic lenses... Which type of protection for which weather?

All weather / Progressive ski goggles

There are two types of all weather goggles:

    Photochromic goggles
The lens changes colour depending on the weather

    Interchangeable goggles
2 lenses available, one for good weather, the other for bad, that are interchangeable depending on the weather.

Our advice for kids

If you're planning to buy your young skier just one ski goggle (which is understandable), we'd advise you to opt for a good weather or all weather mask (photochromic or interchangeable). The bad weather goggles are really dedicated to cloudy or foggy weather and won't be ideal for sunny days.

What's more, we've chosen to offer only good weather goggles for toddlers (kids aged 1 to 3), because we attach more importance to eye comfort than to visibility at that age.

Note: all Decathlon goggles are anti-fog treated

The anti-fog coating prevents the lenses on the inside of the goggles from fogging up, even in wet weather and during intense physical activity.

Our advice for looking after your kid's mask:
The anti-fog treatment is applied to the inside of the lens. To avoid damaging this coating, we recommend gently patting the inside lens of the goggles with a soft cloth.
The anti-fog treatment isn’t applied to the outside. Therefore you can wipe it with the same cloth.

How do I choose the right size kids’ ski goggles?

The size of the ski goggles will depend on your kid's helmet size.
When fitting, place the helmet on the kid's head, then adjust the goggles over it. Check that the goggles fit snugly over the nose and leave no gap between the top of the goggles and the helmet. It's important that the goggles and helmet complement each other without creating excessive pressure on the kid's face.

Decathlon offers 3 different sizes of kids’ ski goggles:

  • Ski mask size XXS

    Size XXS

Corresponds to a helmet with a head circumference of between 44 and 49 cm.
    Generally for kids under 2.

  • Ski mask size XS

    Size XS

Corresponds to a helmet with a head circumference of between 48 and 52 cm.
Generally for kids from 2 to 4 years.

  • Ski mask size S

    Size S

Corresponds to a helmet with a head circumference of between 53 and 56 cm.
    Generally for kids over 5.

For those who wear prescription glasses

If your kid wears prescription glasses, it's essential to check that they are compatible with the goggles when you try them on. Don't hesitate to go one size up for comfort and to optimise their field of vision.
