How to choose the right cross-country ski poles

Choosing the right pair of poles is important for cross-country skiing.
But how do you choose the length of the ski pole and according to which criteria?
We’ve told you everything there is to know about finding the best pair to accompany you on your winter excursions!

The choice of cross-country skiing pole is based on various criteria: the size, the baskets, the material, and other factors.

We’re here to help you make the best choice of cross-country ski poles.

Telescopic poles, your allies for ski touring or freeride excursions

In both cross-country skiing and freeriding, telescopic poles allow you to move easily on the practice fields.
Climbing, you can adjust the poles to make them relatively short, while you can extend them for the downhill.

A pair of single-section poles specially designed for freeriding (with a large basket) can also be used for cross-country skiing. A longer dual-material handle can allow you to manage the length of the pole for uphill/downhill without needing to use a telescopic pole system.

What size is best for the baskets, handles and pole material on cross-country ski poles?

The size of cross-country ski poles

To determine the correct size of your poles, they need to be turned over, held vertically, with your hand placed under the basket in such a way as to form a 90° angle with your forearm.

We advise you to carry out this operation with your knees slightly bent, and your ski boots on.

Why are there several different basket sizes?

For your poles to be efficient, the basket that’s located at the end of the pole varies in size according to the type of snow on which you’re going to ski. Here are the different diameters available:

  • AVERAGE DIAMETER

This is perfect for practising cross-country skiing on marked routes, the edges of the slopes and where it's slightly powdery.

  • BIG DIAMETER

This has been designed for excursions in fresh, powdery snow (ungroomed). Big baskets allow you to sink less into the snow when climbing or descending.

  • The half basket

These baskets have been designed for ascents in cross-country skiing, they offer you better grip on the slope when in a climbing position. This allows you not to lose your balance on the slope using this half basket.

The material of the ski pole

The material comprising the baton of your ski pole affects its weight and resistance. This makes it an important element when choosing the perfect pair of cross-country ski poles. There are several different materials used for ski pole batons: for cross-country skiing, we often talk of poles made of aluminium, titanium and carbon.
Today, aluminium is the most commonly-used material on the market. Composites made of titanium, glass fibre or carbon fibre are increasingly being developed due to their lightness. These composites allow the poles to be more flexible. Poles in carbon, which are lighter, are often used for cross-country skiing.

How to choose the right size for your cross-country ski poles

Now that you have all the elements needed to determine the ideal ski pole for your cross-country skiing, you need to choose the correct size. To determine the correct size of your poles, they need to be turned over, held up vertically, with your hand placed under the basket in such a way as to form a 90° angle with your forearm.

We advise you to carry out this operation with your knees slightly bent, and your ski boots on.

For cross-country skiing, the poles are generally longer. In fact, they must provide good push for uphills. The calculation method is the same, but you must subtract 20 to 30 cm from the size.

Remember, these indications are only approximate. It’s always best to try out the poles before buying them.

Now you're all set to choose your new cross-country ski poles and enjoy your winter sports to the max!
